Following 9/11 there was (once again) an internal debate amongst mental health professionals about how best to address the concept of psychologically dealing with the trauma. (Really this debate had been going on for some time.) Should we talk about “coping with stress” or something else? The “something else”, in this case the idea of “resilience” won out.
What is resilience? Simply put, it is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity. To one degree or another everyone has some level of resilience. Furthermore, resilience is a set of behaviors, thoughts and actions that can be learned, developed and enhanced in anyone. Attached is an interesting and informative discussion of this important psychological concept.
